Roger Penlington

Roger Penlington is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Northumbria University, holding dual roles as Head of Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) and Chair of the UK & Ireland Engineering Education Research Network. He also serves as an Honorary Professor at Durham University’s Energy Institute. His academic journey includes a PhD in glass manufacture from Sheffield Hallam University (1994) and a BEng (Hons) from Sheffield City Polytechnic (1991).

Prof. Penlington’s research spans engineering education, sustainable manufacturing, glass technology, and EDI advancement. He has supervised 15 completed PhDs and actively participates in external examining roles across UK higher education institutions. His leadership roles include former Head of Education at Northumbria’s Mechanical and Construction Engineering Department and President of the Society of Glass Technology (2012–2014).

Key research contributions include advancing pedagogical practices via Activity Theory, promoting inclusive education for underrepresented groups, and investigating climate-related geophysical phenomena. He has secured grants including a £100k British Council project addressing barriers for female engineers and a £10k CUSP initiative enhancing intercultural competencies in engineering education.
