Robert McNamara is a Principal Lecturer Emeritus at the University of Washington's Department of English, within the College of Arts & Sciences. He specializes in academic writing, poetry, and writing pedagogy, and directs the Puget Sound Writing Project. His research explores interdisciplinary writing, poetic form, and translation. McNamara holds a B.A. from Amherst College (1972), an M.A. from Colorado State University (1975), and a Ph.D. from the University of Washington (1985). Notable publications include poetry collections like Abiding Time (2024), Incomplete Strangers (2013), and translations such as The Cat Under the Stairs (2020). His work bridges literary traditions with contemporary themes, emphasizing meditative and existential inquiries. McNamara has contributed to teaching initiatives and public scholarship through the Program for Writing Across Campus and the Simpson Center for the Humanities.
