Dr. Robert Fleisig is a Teaching Professor at the Walter G Booth School of Engineering Practice and Technology at McMaster University, with an associate membership in Mechanical Engineering. He leads the M.Eng. Engineering Design program and focuses on fostering empathy, creativity, and interdisciplinary problem-solving in students. His expertise spans design thinking, health technology, and human-centred design for aging and wellness.
Research Interests: Dr. Fleisig’s work integrates design methodologies with real-world challenges, emphasizing collaboration across disciplines and communities. His projects include developing healthcare technologies and sustainable solutions through partnerships with hospitals, businesses, and global organizations like the Ugandan community project highlighted in news articles.
Awards: He received the 2017–2018 OCUFA Teaching Award for his impactful pedagogical approaches. His teaching emphasizes experiential learning, such as a first-year course where students from multiple faculties collaborate to solve complex community problems.
Labs & Projects: Dr. Fleisig’s initiatives include the “Factory in a Box” project improving wheelchair access in Uganda and collaborations with the Burlington Rotary Club on manufacturing solutions for developing countries. He also co-edits the International Journal for Students as Partners, promoting student-faculty collaboration in academia.
