Prof. Robert Ash is a Professor of Economics with expertise in China and Taiwan at SOAS, University of London, where he teaches in the Departments of Economics and Financial and Management Studies. He has served as Director of the SOAS Taiwan Studies Programme since 1999 and received the Freedom Medal of Diplomacy from the ROC Government in 2010. His research focuses on sustainable development, regional economic development in China, food security, energy, population dynamics, and social welfare. He has authored 15 books and numerous articles, and his consultancy work includes advising international banks and multinationals, as well as collaborating with the ILO on rural employment and migration.
Prof. Ash has held visiting positions in Australia, Hong Kong, France, and Italy. His academic leadership includes coordinating the EU-China Academic Network (1997–2001) and leading the Contemporary China Institute at SOAS (1986–1995). He maintains active engagement in global academic and policy communities, focusing on China's economic and socio-political challenges.
