Prof. Gordon Cheung is an Associate Professor in International Relations of China at Durham University’s School of Government and International Affairs. He has held visiting positions at institutions including the National University of Singapore, Tsinghua University, and the University of Tübingen. Since 2007, he has been a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK) and serves on the advisory board of the European Research Centre on Contemporary Taiwan (ERCCT) since 2008. He has edited East Asia: An International Quarterly since 2004 and authored influential books on China’s political economy and international relations.
He earned his PhD from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1997 and has taught globally. His research focuses on China’s global economic development, China-Taiwan economic relations, and the political economy of food and diaspora networks. He has explored themes such as the Belt and Road Initiative, SME policies in the UK, and the role of Chinese business networks in global contexts.
His awards include the Higher Education Academy Fellowship. Collaborations with scholars like Edmund Terence Gomez highlight his interdisciplinary approach. He has led special journal issues on topics like 'Greater China and Regional Governance' and 'Made in China vs. Made by Chinese.' His work bridges theoretical frameworks with empirical studies, addressing contemporary challenges in global political economy.
