Rev. Robert A. Dowd, C.S.C., is the 18th President of the University of Notre Dame, effective June 1, 2024. He joined the Notre Dame faculty as a member of the Department of Political Science in 2004, specializing in comparative politics with a focus on religion's impact on democratic institutions in sub-Saharan Africa. He holds a doctorate in political science from UCLA and has published extensively in leading journals and a book with Oxford University Press.

His research explores how Christian and Islamic communities influence democracy, migrant/refugee integration in Europe, and faith-based education in Africa. He founded Notre Dame’s Ford Program in Human Development Studies and Solidarity and served in multiple leadership roles, including Vice President and Associate Provost for Interdisciplinary Initiatives.
Father Dowd has received fellowships from Notre Dame’s Ansari Institute, Kellogg Institute, Kroc Institute, and Nanovic Institute. He also serves on boards for Stonehill College and Brother Andre Hospital in Nairobi.
