Rob Cunningham is a Lecturer in the Social Work & Human Services department at RMIT University's School of GUSS (Global, Urban and Social Studies). He serves as the MSW Field Education Coordinator, overseeing practical training programs for social work students. With 25 years of industry experience, his career spans child protection, youth mental health, and trauma-focused work in emergency/disaster contexts both nationally and internationally. His PhD research examined sport-based youth development programs for refugee youth, shaping his current focus on culturally informed, participatory action research with marginalized communities.
Key professional activities include coordinating the MSW Field Education Program and advancing participatory action methodologies. His research explores trauma-informed practices, community-driven solutions, and the intersection of sport and social justice. He is available to supervise postgraduate research in these areas.
Rob holds an ORCID identifier (0009-0009-5696-5825) and has published extensively on pandemic-era field education challenges, cultural humility in program design, and youth empowerment through sports.
