Dr Richard White is an Associate Professor in Human Geography at Sheffield Hallam University, affiliated with the School of Engineering and Built Environment and the College of Social Sciences and Arts. His research focuses on anarchist geographies, critical animal geographies, and the sociology of space and place. He holds a PhD, MSc, and BA, and has contributed extensively to academic journals and edited volumes.
His teaching spans undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including 'Advanced Field Research' and 'Globalisation, Democracy and Change'. He supervises PhD students and has organized major conferences such as the 1st International Conference of Anarchist Geographies and Geographers. Dr White has secured grants from bodies like the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and the Economic and Social Research Council.
His research explores non-capitalist economic practices, mutual aid, and vegan-anarchist geographies. He advocates for post-capitalist futures and has published on topics like community self-help, critical animal studies, and spatial justice. He serves on editorial boards for journals like ACME and the Journal for Critical Animal Studies.
Dr White’s work bridges academia and activism, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to social and environmental justice. His recent projects address animal liberation, posthumanism, and solidarity economies, reflecting a commitment to transformative research.
