Richard Purkiss is a Research Fellow in the Department of History at the University of Manchester. He is a core member of the Leverhulme-funded 'Making the March' project, investigating the Anglo-Welsh frontier before the Norman Conquest through interdisciplinary archaeology and history. His research focuses on social, legal, and landscape aspects of Anglo-Saxon England, with a particular emphasis on mechanisms of political unification.
His current monograph project, East Anglia and the English Kingdom, c. 880–1066, examines how the West Saxon dynasty consolidated power across expanding territories. His published work includes a 2019 chapter analyzing early royal rights in the Liberty of St Edmund.
