Dan Armstrong's research focuses on medieval papal diplomacy, particularly with the periphery of Europe, including the British-Irish Isles. He examines how historical narratives were reshaped in the wake of the Norman Conquest of 1066, especially concerning the relationship between England and the papacy. His work intersects with themes of legitimacy, frontier identity, and ecclesiastical authority in the 11th and 12th centuries.
His recent publications, including the edited volume Borders and the Norman World and articles in the Haskins Society Journal, reflect a strong trend in medieval frontier studies, Norman expansion, and the role of the papacy in legitimizing political change. His scholarship combines diplomatic, historiographical, and cultural analysis to explore how medieval actors rewrote the past to suit new political realities.
