Dr Stephen P Marritt is a Lecturer in History at the University of Glasgow, specializing in the political, ecclesiastical, and social history of the Anglo-Norman period in Britain (11th–12th centuries). He teaches undergraduate courses on subjects including The Norman Conquest, King Stephen's Civil War, and the medieval papacy, as well as postgraduate courses in palaeography and diplomatics. His research focuses on medieval church-state dynamics, aristocratic networks, and Anglo-Scottish relations, with a particular interest in episcopal roles and charter diplomacy.
Dr Marritt has supervised numerous doctoral students exploring topics such as Norman bishops, medieval military clergy, and Anglo-Norman kinship networks. His publications include articles on archdeacons' authority, relic lists in cartularies, and papal letters in baronial contexts, as well as book reviews evaluating key works in medieval Scottish and Anglo-Norman studies. Current research interests include conceptualizing Scottish charter practices and the role of bishops in regional conflict during the Anarchy period.
Teaching initiatives include collaborations with museums and charities, offering historical expertise to community projects. His work bridges textual analysis with institutional history, emphasizing the interplay between political structures and religious institutions in medieval Britain.
