Professor Stephen Baxter is the Clarendon Professor of Medieval History and Barron Fellow and Tutor in Medieval History at the University of Oxford. He holds affiliations with St Peter’s College and the History Faculty. His research focuses on politics, government, and society in England and neighboring regions between the 10th and 12th centuries, particularly the Norman Conquest and Domesday Book. He teaches survey courses on British and European medieval history at St Peter’s College.
Education: B.A. in History from Oxford, Ph.D. in medieval history after working in investment banking. Key projects include the Prosopography of Anglo-Saxon England (PASE) and Exon Domesday collaborative studies. Public engagement includes BBC documentaries such as BBC2’s Domesday and BBC4’s Children of the Middle Ages.
Research interests emphasize family dynamics in medieval power structures, Norman conquest impacts, and landed society transformations. Collaborations include co-authoring Making Domesday (2021) and digital resources like PASE Domesday mapping medieval landholders.
