Dr. Kathleen Cushing is a Reader in Medieval History at Keele University, serving as Head of the School of Humanities and President of the Iuris canonici medii aevi consociatio (ICMAC). With a BA from Sarah Lawrence College, she holds an MPhil and DPhil in History from the University of Oxford (St John’s College). Her career includes teaching at the University of Manchester and a Mellon postdoctoral fellowship at Toronto’s Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies, where she earned a Licentiate in Medieval Studies (summa cum laude).
Her research focuses on early medieval Europe’s religious and social history, particularly legal and intellectual developments, hagiography, and religious dissent between 900–1200. Key areas include the Gregorian reform, canon law’s role in polemics, and monastic legal compilations. She is currently writing a book on monastic compilers of canon law.
Publications include Reform and the Papacy in the Eleventh Century (2005) and Papacy and Law in the Gregorian Revolution (1998), plus edited volumes such as Readers, Texts and Compilers in the Earlier Middle Ages (2009). Recent articles address canon law transmission, papal authority, and monastic legal centers.
Awards include the Licentiate in Medieval Studies (summa cum laude).
Her academic leadership roles include department headship and international scholarly society presidency. She actively contributes to medieval canon law research and pedagogy.
