John Hudson is a distinguished academic holding concurrent professorships as Bishop Wardlaw Professor of Legal History at the University of St Andrews (since 2017) and William W. Cook Global Law Professor at the University of Michigan Law School (since 2012). His career spans over three decades, including prior roles as Professor of Legal History at St Andrews (2003–present), Reader in Mediaeval History (1997–2003), and Lecturer in Mediaeval History (1988–1997).
He holds fellowships from the British Academy (2016), Royal Society of Edinburgh (2014), and Royal Historical Society (1994). His research focuses on medieval legal systems, particularly Anglo-Norman England, with a focus on legal historiography and the evolution of common law. Current projects include an ERC Advanced Grant-funded study on 'Civil Law, Common Law, Customary Law.'
Hudson’s publications include seminal works like Land, Law, and Lordship in Anglo-Norman England (1994) and The Oxford History of the Laws of England (2012). His work bridges legal, institutional, and comparative historical analyses, with recent projects exploring medieval power dynamics across Christendom and Islamicate societies.
