Dr Paul Antony Hayward serves as a Senior Lecturer in Late Roman and Earlier Medieval History within the Department of History at Lancaster University's School of Global Affairs. His scholarly work focuses on communication, historical practice, and classical culture in the European Middle Ages, with particular emphasis on later Anglo-Saxon and Anglo-Norman England (900-1200 CE). He has written extensively about major historical genres including hagiography, chronicles, and rhetorical histories that flourished during this period.
Dr Hayward's research examines how medieval historians recorded and interpreted their world, with special attention to William of Malmesbury and John of Worcester. He is currently working on two book projects: one analyzing the genesis and reception of William of Malmesbury's Histories of the English, and another exploring the relationship between bells, communication, and society in medieval England. His scholarship reveals how rhetorical strategies and classical traditions shaped historical consciousness in medieval England.
During 2011-12, Dr Hayward was a member of the School of Historical Studies at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, USA, reflecting the significance of his contributions to medieval studies. His publications demonstrate consistent engagement with medieval English historiography, textual transmission, and the cultural agency of medieval elites.
Dr Hayward teaches undergraduate courses including Hist101: The Fall of Rome, Hist200: The Making of Germany (843-1122), Hist202: Norman England (1066-1154), and Hist424: Medieval Primary Sources—Genre, Rhetoric and Transmission. He actively supervises PhD students working on later Roman, earlier and high medieval Europe, particularly those researching historical practice and classical reception in medieval England between 900 and 1200.
