Dr. Richard Jones is a Science Fellow at the Met Office Hadley Centre and a Visiting Professor in the School of Geography and Environment at the University of Oxford. He leads work on regional climate modeling systems, climate projections, and their applications in climate adaptation and international development. His roles include managing the HadGEM3-RA regional climate model and the dissemination of the PRECIS system globally.
He holds a PhD in mathematics from the University of Oxford, focusing on numerical methods for oil reservoir modeling, followed by postdoctoral research in Oxford’s Mathematics Department. He joined the Hadley Centre in 1990, where he developed its regional climate modeling capability and pioneered ensemble downscaling methods.
His research emphasizes high-resolution climate modeling, scenario development, and communication of climate science to policymakers. Notably, he authored the IPCC AR5 Regional Context chapter and contributed to earlier IPCC assessments. Current projects include collaborations with Met Service Singapore, the EU’s EUPORIAS initiative, and the DfID-funded Climate Science Research Programme.
Richard advises climate resilience projects in Asia and Africa and coordinates Met Office Academic Partnership activities on climate services and African climate research. He serves as the UNFCCC Nairobi Work Programme focal point for climate adaptation-related science.
