معرفی
Richard Betts serves as Chair in Climate Impacts at the University of Exeter and Head of Climate Impacts Research at the Met Office Hadley Centre. He is UK science co-lead for the AmazonFACE programme and expert advisor to the Climate Change Committee for the 4th UK Climate Change Risk Assessment.
His academic qualifications include:
- BSc in Physics, University of Bristol (1991)
- MSc in Meteorology and Applied Climatology, University of Birmingham (1992)
- PhD in Meteorology, University of Reading (1998)
His research centers on large-scale modeling of ecosystem-hydrology-climate interactions, with pioneering work extending climate models to incorporate biological processes. Key interests include climate change impacts on water resources (particularly vegetation-mediated effects), Amazonian ecosystem responses to deforestation, and land cover change influences on climate systems. His methodology integrates terrestrial, hydrological, and ecological modeling to assess high-end climate scenarios.
He has been honored with the MBE for services to climate science:
- Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE)
Betts leads major climate initiatives including the EU Framework 7 HELIX project assessing 1.5°C and 4°C warming impacts, and directed the technical report for the UK's 3rd Climate Change Risk Assessment. As IPCC Lead Author across four assessment reports (Working Groups I, II, and II Water chapter), he has shaped global understanding of land cover change impacts and freshwater vulnerabilities. His current focus includes the AmazonFACE programme examining forest responses to elevated CO2.
He heads the Climate Impacts Research division at the Met Office Hadley Centre, driving collaborative work between academic modeling and operational climate services through the University of Exeter's Global Systems Institute.
