Ambarish Karmalkar is a Research Assistant Professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, affiliated with the Department of Geosciences and the Northeast Climate Adaptation Science Center (NE CASC). His work focuses on regional and global climate modeling, uncertainty quantification in climate projections, and climate impacts assessment in the northeastern United States, the Caribbean, and Central America.
His research interests include:
- Regional and global climate modeling
- Uncertainty quantification in climate projections
- Climate variability and change
- Downscaling techniques and model evaluation
- Climate impacts on hydrology and ecosystems
- Climate services and stakeholder engagement
His recent publications highlight trends in climate modeling, particularly in evaluating and selecting credible global climate models (GCMs) for regional studies, understanding coastal warming, and assessing hydrological extremes. His work integrates process-based model evaluation, ensemble methods, and stakeholder-relevant climate information for decision-making.
Ambarish Karmalkar has contributed to climate assessments for policymakers, including climate projections for New York and Massachusetts. He has collaborated with institutions such as the Met Office Hadley Centre and Oxford University, and his research supports climate adaptation planning through credible, spatially coherent climate data.
He has advised or collaborated on projects involving climate data use in ecological and hydrological impact studies and has led efforts to produce state-wide climate projections for Massachusetts. His work is supported by agencies such as the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the National Science Foundation (NSF).
He is actively involved in climate science communication and has contributed to national climate assessments and climate reports for politicians.
