Dr. Richard Hamshaw is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Psychology at the University of Bath, where he also serves as Director of Undergraduate Studies in Psychology. His academic background includes a PhD in Psychology from the University of Bath (2018), an MSc in Research Methods in Psychology from the University of Southampton (2014), and a BSc in Psychology from the Open University (2012).
He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and a Chartered Psychologist (CPsychol) with the British Psychological Society.
Dr. Hamshaw is a social psychologist specializing in social media use, health communication, and appearance concerns. His research employs mixed-methods and qualitative approaches to investigate how people engage with social media data, particularly focusing on:
- How individuals with food allergies and intolerances use social media
- How users evaluate credibility of social media sources
- Men's attitudes toward appearance and grooming
- LGBTQ experiences, particularly PrEP uptake among young UK men
His recent research output shows a strong focus on health communication, with publications examining body dissatisfaction, barriers to PrEP uptake, open data practices, dietary transitions, and male grooming practices.
