Dr Philippa Carr is a Senior Lecturer in Qualitative Research Methods at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), based in the School of Social Sciences within the College of Health, Science and Society. She specializes in teaching Social Psychology and Qualitative Research Methods at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. As co-theme lead for the Identities, Subjectivities and Inequalities research theme in the Social Science Research Group, her work focuses on how wealth inequality and extreme wealth are represented in media and discourse.
Her qualifications include a PhD, Chartered Psychologist (CPsychol) status, and roles as Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society (AFBPSsS) and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). She actively contributes to professional psychology communities through committee memberships in the BPS Qualitative Methods in Psychology and Social Psychology sections.
Research interests include analyzing media narratives around wealth inequality, particularly through entertainment documentaries about the super-rich, and exploring how societal concepts like inheritance and tax avoidance impact social mobility. She employs Discursive Psychology to investigate how psychological concepts are deployed to legitimize economic disparities.
Her publications span topics such as media framing of wealth, healthcare worker narratives, and ideological dynamics in political communication. She welcomes PhD inquiries applying Discursive Psychology to wealth inequality studies.
Dr Carr supervises research projects on social and economic inequality, bridging academic rigor with real-world societal issues. Her work underscores critical engagement with media, policy, and psychological frameworks shaping perceptions of wealth and class in contemporary society.
