Dr. Carr's research centers on attachment theory as a framework for understanding human relationships, with applications in education, social policy, foster care, and aging. He investigates how emotional bonds shape motivation, wellbeing, and identity throughout life. His work explores existential loneliness in older adults, biographical pain, and the concept of being tired of life in later years. He also examines how social and political structures influence attachment formation and psychological experiences, particularly among vulnerable populations such as underprivileged youth and care-experienced children.
His recent publications reveal a strong focus on gerontology, bereavement, and public engagement. Articles in The Conversation and journals like Omega: The Journal of Death and Dying highlight his work on collective grief, celebrity bereavement, and cross-cultural loneliness. His research often employs qualitative methods to explore lived experiences, emphasizing narrative and existential dimensions of psychological distress. Themes of connection, isolation, and meaning-making recur across his work, bridging psychology, education, and social justice.
Dr. Carr has been recognized with two significant awards: the Recognizing Excellence Award (2024) for public engagement and the Excellence in Curriculum Transformation Award (July 2023). These reflect his impact beyond academia, particularly in communicating psychological insights to broader audiences and improving educational practices.
He has supervised 16 doctoral students and is actively involved in research grants, including the Understanding Tiredness Of Life in Older People Research Network (2022–2026). His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to reduced inequalities, good health and wellbeing, and quality education. He is a frequent speaker at public events, delivering keynotes on loneliness, aging, and connection, such as at the ARCO Conference and Loneliness Awareness Week.
