Richard A. Voit, M.D., Ph.D., serves as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He holds affiliations with the Children's Research Institute, Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center, and practices as an Attending Physician at Children’s Medical Center Dallas Gill Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders.
His academic journey began with a B.S. in Molecular Biology as a Eugene McDermott Scholar at the University of Texas at Dallas, followed by combined M.D./Ph.D. training at UT Southwestern. Clinical training included pediatrics residency and hematology-oncology fellowship at Boston Children's Hospital and Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
Dr. Voit's research centers on transcriptional and translational regulation of hematopoiesis, specifically investigating hematopoietic stem cell maintenance and lineage commitment mechanisms. His lab explores how dysregulation of these processes drives acute myeloid leukemia and inherited bone marrow failure syndromes like Diamond-Blackfan anemia, with the ultimate goal of developing targeted gene therapies. Current work focuses on GATA1-based therapeutic strategies and hematopoietic regulatory networks co-opted in malignancy.
Analysis of his 15 most recent publications reveals dominant themes in gene therapy development for bone marrow failure syndromes, clonal hematopoiesis mechanisms, and multi-omics approaches to dissect hematopoietic regulation. Key methodologies include single-cell genome editing, transcriptional network mapping, and translational validation in disease models.
Major recognitions include:
- CPRIT First-time Tenure-track Scholar
- Horchow Family Endowed Scholar in Pediatrics
- NCI K08 Career Development Award
- Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation Young Investigator Award
- Edward P. Evans Foundation Young Investigator Award
His research program is supported by NCI K08 funding and foundation awards, operating through the Voit Lab—a trainee-centered, patient-focused team dedicated to advancing pediatric blood disorder treatments. The lab maintains strong translational emphasis, collaborating with clinical programs at Children’s Medical Center to accelerate therapy development for conditions like acute myeloid leukemia and inherited marrow failures.
