Rich Jones is a Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior and Neurology at Brown University's Warren Alpert Medical School. He leads the Quantitative Science Program (QSP), focusing on methodological advancements in clinical neuroscience research. His primary research areas include cognitive reserve hypothesis, delirium, Alzheimer's disease, and measurement science. Jones holds a ScD from Johns Hopkins University and a BA from George Washington University.
His current roles include Director of QSP (2017–present) and Associate Professor (2013–2017). He has held academic positions at Harvard Medical School (2004–2013) and the Institute for Aging Research (1997–2013). Key honors include the NIMH Traineeship, Exceptional Reviewer Awards (Medical Care), and Top Reviewer distinctions (Journal of the American Geriatrics Society).
Research interests emphasize psychometric methods (item response theory, structural equation modeling) applied to dementia/delirium/depression. Over 124 publications span cognitive aging epidemiology, delirium severity scoring, and translational tools like the 3D-CAM screening instrument. Current grants (NIH/NIA) focus on cognitive assessment harmonization and delirium severity toolkits.
Teaching includes workshops on latent variable methods and co-leads the SAGES study on postoperative outcomes. Collaborations involve Butler Hospital, Harvard's Aging Brain Center, and international HCAP networks. His work bridges rigorous methodology with clinical impact, addressing critical gaps in geriatric neuropsychiatric care.
