Ria-Maria Adams is a researcher at the Institute of Cultural and Social Anthropology within the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Vienna. She focuses on Arctic youth, youth well-being, and the impact of transport infrastructures on communities in Northern Finland, Northern Fennoscandia, and shrinking towns. Her work includes contributions to the ERC-funded Infranorth project and the Finnish case study of the LISH project at Aalto University.
- PhD in Social and Cultural Anthropology (University of Vienna, 2024)
- Guest Researcher at the Arctic Centre, University of Lapland
- Contributor to the Arctic Anthropology Team led by Prof. Florian Stammler
Her research explores the interplay between infrastructural development, socioeconomic challenges, and youth aspirations in remote Arctic regions. This work spans topics like neoliberal subjectivities in declining areas, self-responsibilization in shrinking towns, and the cultural significance of Arctic transportation networks.
Recent publications highlight trends in Arctic urban studies, rural youth mobility, and the role of local initiatives in shrinking cities. Adams’ work frequently addresses the complexities of liveability, peripheralization, and the “good life” in post-extractive industrial contexts across Finland, Sweden, Russia, and Germany.
She is affiliated with the Infranorth consortium and collaborates with institutions such as the Arctic Centre (University of Lapland) and Aalto University. Her fieldwork in Finnish Lapland and the Fennoscandian Arctic informs her critical perspectives on mobility, regional decline, and youth agency.
