Ria-Maria Adams is a Researcher at the University of Vienna's Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology, Faculty of Social Sciences. She contributes to the ERC project 'InfraNorth' examining transport infrastructures in the Fennoscandian Arctic. Her 2024 PhD thesis focused on youth wellbeing in northern Finland, building on prior work with the 'Live, Work or Leave?' project at the University of Lapland.
Research interests center on Arctic youth experiences, wellbeing in shrinking northern towns, transport infrastructure impacts, and socio-economic transitions across Finnish Lapland and Fennoscandia. Her work employs ethnographic approaches to understand community resilience.
Publications address spatial inequalities and youth agency in Arctic industrial towns, examining how local initiatives respond to regional shrinkage and infrastructural transformations across northern peripheries.
