Maria Huhmarniemi is an Associate Professor and Vice Dean at the Faculty of Art and Design, University of Lapland. Her roles include leadership in academic administration and teaching in art education and applied visual arts since 2002. She holds a Docent title in Social Pedagogy from the University of Eastern Finland, specializing in Community-Based Art Education.
Research Interests: Maria’s work focuses on political contemporary art, Arctic art, environmental education, and craft-based art practices. She emphasizes socially and environmentally engaged arts, integrating interdisciplinary approaches. Key areas include craftivism, sustainability in art education, and the revitalization of traditional craft heritage.
Grants & Projects: Principal Investigator in projects such as ASAD Nordplus 2025 (Arctic Sustainable Arts and Design), Lessons of the Land: New Genre Arctic Art And Land-Based Learning, and initiatives exploring AI in multisensory art education. Collaborates internationally, including with the Memorial University of Newfoundland and Finnish educational agencies.
Labs/Networks: Active in Northern Art, Community and Environment Research (NACER) and the UArctic Thematic Network on Arctic Sustainable Arts and Design (ASAD). Leads exhibitions and curatorial projects emphasizing community and environmental themes.
