Dr. Rhian M Touyz is a clinician-scientist and Professor in Family Medicine at McGill University’s Faculty of Medicine, serving as Executive Director and Chief Scientific Officer of the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). She holds the Dr. Phil Gold Chair in Medicine. Previously, she served as Director of the Institute of Cardiovascular & Medical Sciences at the University of Glasgow (2011–2021) and held leadership roles in hypertension research globally.
Her education includes a BSc(Hons), MBBCh, MSc, and PhD from South Africa, followed by postdoctoral work at the Clinical Research Institute of Montreal (CRIM) and roles at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. She has been a Canada Research Chair in Hypertension (Tier 1) and has trained over 100 PhD/MD students and fellows.
Dr. Touyz’s research focuses on hypertension mechanisms, vascular biology, oxidative stress, and translational cardiovascular research. Major topics include molecular signaling in hypertension, TRPM channels, and cardiometabolic disease. Her work bridges basic science and clinical care, emphasizing prevention and treatment of cardiovascular complications. She has authored over 575 peer-reviewed papers and led international hypertension organizations such as the International Society of Hypertension (2014–2016) and the European Council for Cardiovascular Research (2019–2021).
