Professor Rebecca Hamilton is a Professor of Law at American University's Washington College of Law, specializing in international law, national security, and criminal law. She holds a J.D. from Harvard Law School, an M.A. from the Harvard Kennedy School, and a BEcon from the University of Sydney. A 2024 U.S. Fulbright Scholar and former Visiting Professor at UCLA Law, she also serves as Executive Editor at Just Security. Her research focuses on structural factors enabling international crimes, with emphasis on technology's role and climate change impacts.
Her professional journey includes roles at the International Criminal Court, International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, and the Bernstein Institute for Human Rights. Awards include the WCL Award for Innovation in Pedagogy (2021) and Pauline Ruyle Moore Scholars Award (2018, 2020). As a Council on Foreign Relations fellow, she contributed to the Department of Defense's Office of Special Operations.
Research interests span atrocity prevention, user-generated evidence in international courts, and legal responses to online hate. Notable publications include Fighting for Darfur: Public Action and the Struggle to Stop Genocide and works in the Yale Journal of International Law and Harvard International Law Journal. She actively mentors first-generation students through WCL’s ADVANCE program and advocates for justice in conflict zones.
Professional affiliations include the New York Bar, American Society of International Law, and Council on Foreign Relations. Her work bridges academia, journalism, and policy, addressing contemporary challenges in international criminal justice and human rights.
