Jennifer Leaning, MD, SMH, is a Professor of the Practice of Health and Human Rights at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and a Senior Research Fellow at the Harvard FXB Center for Health and Human Rights. She is also a faculty member in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Her academic roles include former Director of the Harvard FXB Center (2010–2018) and co-director of the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative (2005–2010).

Research Interests: Dr. Leaning focuses on public health and international law in war and disaster contexts, early warning systems for mass atrocities, and human security in forced migration and conflict. She has conducted fieldwork in over 20 crisis-affected regions, including Afghanistan, Kosovo, Somalia, and Darfur.
Leadership & Engagement: She has served on boards of Physicians for Human Rights, Oxfam America, and the American Red Cross. Currently, she chairs the Steering Committee of Global Action Against Mass Atrocity Crimes and sits on the Board of Directors for the Norwegian Refugee Council USA. She previously edited the journal Medicine and Global Survival (1994–2001).
Publications: Authored/co-edited influential works such as Humanitarian Crises: The Medical and Public Health Response. Her research informs policy briefs for UN agencies, the International Criminal Court, and NGOs.
