Claudio Grossman is a Professor of Law and Dean Emeritus at American University Washington College of Law (WCL), where he served as dean from 1994 to 2016. He holds the Raymond Geraldson Scholar title for International and Humanitarian Law. Grossman is a globally recognized authority in international law, human rights, and international organizations. He earned a Doctor in de Rechtsgeleerdheid from the University of Amsterdam (1980) and a Licenciado en Ciencias Jurídicas y Sociales from the University of Chile (1971, summa cum laude).
As Dean of WCL, he expanded the school’s academic programs, clinical offerings, and international initiatives, earning recognition as one of legal education's top 25 influencers. His international roles include membership on the UN International Law Commission (2017–2027), chairing its Drafting Committee, and serving as Special Rapporteur on Immunity of State Officials. He has also held leadership positions in the UN Committee Against Torture (CAT), the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), and Chile’s constitutional development Technical Committee.
Grossman’s research focuses on international human rights law, humanitarian law, and the role of international organizations. His landmark contributions include shaping CAT General Comment 3 on reparations, advocating for indigenous rights, and participating in high-profile cases before the International Court of Justice. He has authored numerous publications on international law and human rights.
