Prof. Rayf Shiell is a Professor in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at Trent University. He teaches a wide range of undergraduate and graduate physics courses, including Introductory Astronomy, Quantum Mechanics, Thermal Physics, and Advanced Optics. His research focuses on ocular biomechanics and physics education, particularly integrated testlet methodologies. He has authored Pedrotti's Introduction to Optics, 4th ed., a revised textbook emphasizing phenomena-driven learning.
Prof. Shiell’s teaching extends to specialized topics such as Electromagnetic Theory, Molecular Physics, and the Finite Element Method for Physics. He actively involves students in laboratory skills and experimental techniques, as seen in PHYS 4050H. His work balances theoretical and applied physics, with a commitment to fostering curiosity-driven learning.
Notable outreach includes a podcast appearance on Naturally Curious with former student Clayton Law, discussing academic and outdoor pursuits. He has taught at Trent since at least 2005, evidenced by course materials spanning over two decades.
