Kim Bergeron, PhD, is a Professor in the Geography Program at Trent School of the Environment (TSE), Trent University, and a 1991 alumnus. Since 2014, she has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in environment, health, nursing, education, and social service, both online and in-person. Her research focuses on aging-friendly communities, government policies impacting vulnerable populations (e.g., older adults, low-income individuals, rural/remote residents), and spatial resource management’s health implications. She emphasizes a social justice lens in teaching, guiding students to analyze how geographic and socioeconomic factors influence resource availability and environmental health.
Her courses include GEOG 2310H (Geography of Recreation), GEOG-ERST 2330H (Changing Resources in the Circumpolar North), and GEOG-NURS 3820H (Health Geography). Students engage in hands-on activities like auditing parks and neighborhoods to propose evidence-based recommendations. She highlights the importance of 'form follows function' in spatial design and the interplay between human well-being and environmental health.
TSE students value her interactive teaching style and field trips, which foster real-world applications. Alumni report using course concepts in their careers and understanding policy impacts on marginalized groups and ecosystems. Bergeron advises students to adopt open-mindedness and proactive mitigation of negative societal/environmental impacts.
Trent’s geographic location provides unique field opportunities, enhancing experiential learning. Bergeron advocates for voting awareness, emphasizing how policies shape equity and sustainability.
