Sarah L. West is a Professor cross-appointed with the Department of Kinesiology at Trent University. She holds a BPHE, M.Sc., and Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. Her research focuses on exercise physiology, particularly examining bone health in populations with chronic diseases, including adults and children undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplants and those with Turner syndrome. Her work evaluates exercise interventions targeting bone microarchitecture, fracture risk, and metabolic health. She teaches BIOL 1050H: Human Physiology and BIOL 2250H: Nursing/Kinesiology.
Dr. West’s research spans three key areas: (1) characterizing bone health in chronic disease populations, (2) evaluating exercise interventions for bone and muscle health outcomes, and (3) developing preventative strategies for aging adults with chronic conditions. She maintains an active lab at Trent University (LHS D244) and is affiliated with the ESB C105 office. She is recruiting graduate students interested in kinesiology and health research, particularly those with backgrounds in physiology or biology.
Her recent publications (2014–2015) emphasize bone health in chronic kidney disease and pediatric populations, leveraging interdisciplinary approaches to address clinical gaps in exercise-based interventions. She collaborates with institutions on projects involving skeletal muscle microvascular function and fracture risk assessment tools like FRAX.
