Dr. Ray Lu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Guelph. He holds a BSc from Wuhan University, an MSc from Beijing University, and a PhD in Molecular Genetics from the University of Saskatchewan. His postdoctoral work included research at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIH).
His research focuses on cellular stress responses, particularly the Unfolded Protein Response (UPR), and its role in metabolic disorders, viral infections, and animal welfare. Key contributions include discovering novel genes (CREB3, CREBZF, CREBRF) involved in stress signaling pathways. He has developed gene knockout mouse models to study CREB3 and CREBRF functions in glucocorticoid signaling and lipid metabolism.
Current research themes explore genetic variations influencing stress susceptibility and metabolic disorders, as well as the interplay between stress hormones and behaviors. Dr. Lu’s work bridges molecular genetics, cell biology, and animal physiology.
He teaches courses in molecular biology, genetics, and virology, including MCB*2050 (Molecular Biology of the Cell) and MICR*4330 (Molecular Virology). Graduate student opportunities are available in his lab, which investigates stress response mechanisms and metabolic regulation.
