Dr Martin Schroeder is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biosciences at Durham University. His research focuses on molecular mechanisms of the unfolded protein response (UPR), endoplasmic reticulum stress, and yeast genetics. He holds a PhD from the Technical University of Darmstadt and completed postdoctoral training at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the University of Michigan Medical School.
His research interests include understanding how cells respond to protein misfolding stress in the endoplasmic reticulum, particularly in the context of metabolic disorders like diabetes. He investigates signaling pathways such as IRE1 and PERK activation, as well as the interplay between ER stress and cell differentiation.
Key contributions include defining roles of the UPR in insulin resistance, JNK signaling pathways, and developmental processes in yeast. Recent work highlights mechanisms linking ER stress to adipocyte dysfunction and metabolic syndrome. His publications span molecular biology techniques, stress response dynamics, and protein quality control systems.
Current students under his supervision include Andrea Meza-Leon (PhD), Caitlin Gould (MSc), Haiyang Yu (PhD), Islam Hayajneh (PhD), and Wanqiu Wang (PhD). Research activities are centered in the Biosciences Department with collaborations in cellular stress signaling and metabolic disease mechanisms.
