Randy Jones is an Associate Dean and Professor at the University of Virginia School of Nursing, where he leads research in health disparities, prostate cancer, chronic illness, and shared decision-making. He has received major funding from the NIH, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, American Cancer Society, and other institutions. His work focuses on improving patient outcomes through innovative decision-support tools, particularly for underserved populations.
Dr. Jones earned a BS in Biology from Hampden-Sydney College and completed his nursing education at UVA, earning a BSN, MSN, post-master’s certificate, and PhD in Nursing. His academic journey reflects a strong interdisciplinary foundation in both biological sciences and nursing research.
His research centers on reducing health disparities in prostate cancer, especially among African American men. He developed a widely recognized iPad-based decision-making tool that guides patients and caregivers through treatment choices, addressing side effects, personal priorities, and decisional regret. His work emphasizes patient-family communication, cultural competence, and community engagement. He also investigates mHealth, telehealth (e.g., tele-cystoscopy), and smart health systems for cancer pain management. His recent publications highlight themes in oncology nursing, health equity, and patient-centered interventions.
His 15 most recent articles reflect a consistent focus on decision-making, health disparities, and technology-enabled care. They span prostate and breast cancer, colorectal survivorship, telehealth, and structural racism in research. Methodologically, he employs qualitative, scoping, and randomized trial designs, often with community-based participatory approaches.

Dr. Jones actively mentors students and collaborates across disciplines. He serves on national advisory boards, including for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and American Academy of Nursing. He leads community advisory boards and is president of the Black Nurses Association of Charlottesville. His grants include NIH R01 funding for decision navigation in advanced prostate cancer and feasibility studies in radiation therapy and cancer pain. He has no known advisees listed, but his leadership in research teams and training of patient navigators suggests strong mentorship capacity.
He leads or contributes to several research initiatives, including the CHAMPION randomized trial, tele-cystoscopy projects, and smart health sensing systems. His labs and teams focus on patient decision support, health equity, and technology integration in oncology care. Future work likely includes expanding decision aids to other cancers (e.g., breast) and refining telehealth solutions for rural access.
