Ralph A. Nixon

Ralph A. Nixon is a Professor in both the Department of Psychiatry and Department of Cell Biology at New York University Grossman School of Medicine. As Director of the Center for Dementia Research and Laboratories of Molecular Neuroscience, he leads cutting-edge investigations into neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer’s disease.

Research Focus: Nixon’s work has fundamentally advanced understanding of endosomal-lysosomal dysfunction in neurodegeneration. His lab established that endosomal miss-signaling from Alzheimer’s-linked genes (APP, presenilins) causes synaptic failure and cholinergic neuron loss. Current projects include validating therapeutic targets for autophagy enhancement and exploring axonal transport mechanisms for cytoskeletal proteins genetically linked to neurocognitive disorders. The lab’s 2022 Phase 2 clinical trial of neflamapimod/VX-7645 demonstrated slowed neurodegeneration markers in Alzheimer’s patients.
