Dr. Rahul Sapra is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at Toronto Metropolitan University. Previously, he served as a Permanent Lecturer (Tenured) at the University of Delhi’s S.G.T.B. Khalsa College. He holds a PhD from Queen’s University and advanced degrees from the University of Delhi. His research focuses on Early-Modern/Renaissance Literatures, Shakespearean Drama, Postcolonial Studies, and South Asian Film. Sapra’s book The Limits of Orientalism critiques Edward Said’s Orientalism, challenging postcolonial readings of 17th-century European texts like Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. He currently serves as Subject Editor of the Film Section for the Routledge Encyclopedia of Modernism.
Dr. Sapra is a vocal advocate for accessible post-secondary education and better faculty conditions in Ontario. He held leadership roles in the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations (OCUFA) as Vice-President (2017–2019), President (2019–2021), and Past-President (2021–2023). He also served as Vice-President (External) of the Toronto Metropolitan Faculty Association (2014–2018). His activism emphasizes government funding for universities and fair employment terms for faculty.
His research also explores Modernist cinema in South Asia and Shakespearean adaptations. Recent workshops include collaborations on Shakespearean theatre and cinema, modernist film studies, and global Shakespearean cinema. He received the Ryersonian of the Year award in 2021.
