Dr. Rafael Adrian is an Associate Professor of Chemistry at the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) since 2013, previously serving as Assistant Professor (2008–2013) and Visiting Assistant Professor at Centre College (2007–2008). He earned a B.S. in Chemistry from Universidad Simón Bolívar (1997) and a Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry from Baylor University (2004), followed by postdoctoral research at the University of Houston (2004–2005) and the University of Texas at San Antonio (2005–2007).
His research focuses on synthesizing novel metallic compounds for cancer drug development, particularly investigating how structural features of metal complexes influence their cytotoxicity. He aims to create more effective, selective, and affordable chemotherapeutic agents. Dr. Adrian’s work involves coordination chemistry, crystal engineering, and structural characterization of transition metal complexes.
He chairs the UIW Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry (2013–2016) and coordinates CHEM1101/1102 lab courses since 2011. He advises the UIW Biochemistry and Chemistry Club and teaches courses ranging from introductory chemistry to advanced inorganic and physical chemistry.
Professional memberships include the American Chemical Society, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and Texas Academy of Sciences. He actively participates in academic governance as a UIW Grievance Committee representative and Texas Academy of Sciences member.
