Charles S. Fermaintt

Dr. Charles S. Fermaintt is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of the Incarnate Word. His research focuses on developing targeted therapies for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) using natural product-derived compounds. He holds a Ph.D. in Biological Chemistry from UT Southwestern Medical Center and completed postdoctoral training at the University of Texas Health Science Center.

• B.S. in Chemistry, magna cum laude (GPA 3.85) from University of Puerto Rico - Humacao (2006-2011)
• Ph.D. in Biological Chemistry from University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (2012-2018)

His laboratory investigates immunogenic compounds and diterpenoids with selective cytotoxicity against TNBC subtypes, particularly the basal-like 2 subtype. Recent work highlights the role of protein kinase C (PKC) as a therapeutic target and explores synergistic effects of eribulin with STING agonists.

Teaching responsibilities include courses in biochemistry, chemical biology, and organic chemistry labs at UIW and Our Lady of the Lake University.
