Dr. Alicia Howard is an Instructor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Incarnate Word since 2021. She previously served as an adjunct professor at UIW and Northwest Vista College. She earned her Ph.D. in Chemistry from Texas Tech University (2016) and a Master of Science in Chemistry (2011), alongside a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology (2007).
Research Interests: Dr. Howard focuses on implementing a Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experience (CUREs) for the Biochemistry I Lab, studying the Malate Dehydrogenase (MDH) enzyme. This research examines the inhibitory effects of altered physiological conditions on MDH kinetics, aiming to enhance STEM engagement. Her prior work involved sterol biochemistry, specifically the Sterol C24-Methyltransferase enzyme.
Teaching: She coordinates introductory chemistry courses for nursing and first-year students, and teaches labs in chemical principles, biochemistry, and organic chemistry. Courses include Biological Chemistry for Health Professionals II, General Chemistry I, and Organic Chemistry labs.
Professional Contributions: She presented research at the AOCS national convention (2010) and co-authored key studies on sterol biochemistry and enzyme mechanisms. Dr. Howard is a certified FLIGHT Mentor with over ten years of teaching experience, emphasizing student mentorship and STEM education.
