Amy L. Springer is a Senior Lecturer and Chief Undergraduate Advisor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She earned her PhD in Molecular Biology from Princeton University and completed postdoctoral training at the California Institute of Technology and the University of Washington.
Her research focuses on understanding pathogenic protozoans, particularly Trypanosoma brucei, which causes African sleeping sickness. Key projects include studying malate dehydrogenase (MDH) isoforms in T. brucei to elucidate their roles in metabolism and redox balance, with a focus on enzyme regulation and substrate channeling mechanisms. She collaborates with global researchers on comparative enzymology of MDH across organisms.
Springer integrates research and education through the Biochem 426 course, where undergraduates conduct original studies on trypanosome biology. Her work bridges molecular genetics, microbiology, and biochemistry, with implications for developing new antiparasitic therapies.
Her publications span parasite biology, malaria pathogenesis, and innovative teaching methods using molecular structure software. She actively mentors undergraduate researchers, as evidenced by numerous co-authored papers with student collaborators.
