Rachele Kanigel (she/her) is a Professor of Journalism at San Francisco State University, where she teaches reporting, writing, and media entrepreneurship courses. She serves as faculty advisor to the student newspaper Golden Gate Xpress and chaired the Journalism Department from 2019 to 2022.
- Education: BA in Journalism from SF State, MA from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism
Her research and professional work focus on media ethics, diversity in journalism, and media entrepreneurship. She edits The Diversity Style Guide, a resource for inclusive media practices, and authored its companion book in 2019. Her other publication, The Student Newspaper Survival Guide, is widely used in college newsrooms globally.
Recent projects highlight her expertise in cross-cultural communication (via a 2019 Fulbright Specialist role in Bhutan) and international media education (directing ieiMedia study-abroad programs in Europe and Israel). She consults for organizations like WebMD, National Alliance on Mental Illness, and Public Relations Society of America on inclusive content strategies.
Her career spans 15 years as a reporter for outlets including The Oakland Tribune, The News & Observer, and TIME magazine, alongside frequent contributions to U.S. News & World Report, People, and MediaShift.
