Rachel Nichols is a Senior Lecturer at the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS), part of the Faculty of Business and Law at the University of Wollongong. She holds a PhD from the University of Tasmania and has held academic positions at both the University of Wollongong and the University of Tasmania. Her research focuses on marine policy, fisheries management, and ocean governance, with particular attention to equity in resource allocation, recreational fishing strategies, and sustainable aquaculture development.
Key research interests include distributive equity in transboundary fisheries, data challenges in recreational fisheries management, and the integration of critical accounting perspectives into ocean policy frameworks. Her work often addresses policy implementation gaps and the socio-economic impacts of marine conservation measures.
Rachel has contributed to projects such as the National Marine Science Strategy (NMSS) White Paper and led the development of the Graduate Certificate in Fisheries Management and Development. Her recent publications emphasize habitat considerations in fisheries recovery, the cost of marine litter, and optimal harvesting policies.
She currently supervises doctoral research exploring recreational fisheries data needs and teaches courses like SEA925 Australian Fisheries Law. Rachel has held governance roles, including Head of Postgraduate Studies and editorial board memberships for Ocean and Society.
