Dr. Kamal Azmi is a Senior Research Fellow at the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS) at the University of Wollongong. His research focuses on fisheries governance in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly equity, transparency, and climate change impacts in international fisheries management. He holds a Master's in environmental management from ANU and a PhD from ANCORS on rights-based management of transboundary fish stocks.
Previously serving over 20 years as an Australian diplomat, Kamal specialized in Pacific and East Asia relations, focusing on development, foreign policy, and trade. He now coordinates the SEA 100 Ocean Conservation course and leads the Graduate Certificate in Fisheries Management and Development. His recent projects include Global Fishing Watch initiatives supporting Pacific nations in marine resource management and transparency.
Research interests span human rights in the fishing sector, distributive equity in catch limits, and climate-driven redistribution of tuna stocks. He actively contributes to policy frameworks through collaborations with regional organizations like the WCPFC and IATTC. Current funding includes a DFAT-supported capacity-building program for Pacific fisheries managers and a Global Fishing Watch project on labor standards data.
Teaching and service activities include course coordination at both undergraduate and graduate levels, peer reviewing for journals like Marine Policy and Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems, and advising on fisheries development initiatives. His work bridges academic research with practical policy solutions for sustainable ocean governance.
