Rachel Davies is a Biology Subject Director and Lecturer in Science Education at King's College London, based in the School of Education, Communication & Society within the Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy. She transitioned to academia in 2019 after 20 years of teaching GCSE and A-level Biology in inner London secondary schools and colleges, focusing on low socio-economic status institutions. Her roles include leading the Biology PGCE course and contributing to the Science PGCE program.
Her research explores biology teachers' pedagogical practices, emphasizing the influence of social context, school environments, and neoliberal education policies. Her PhD (supervised by Melissa Glackin and Sara Black) examines the interplay between teachers' habitus, beliefs, and institutional influences using Bourdieu's theory of practice. She is affiliated with the Centre for Research in Education in Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (CRESTEM).
Rachel's professional development initiatives include designing a successful Duke of Edinburgh award scheme in her former college and delivering programs in Ugandan schools. She values outdoor education and social equity in teaching, reflecting her commitment to expanding opportunities for all students.
