Prabhuraj Venkatraman

Dr. Prabhuraj Venkatraman is a Senior Lecturer at the Manchester Fashion Institute, Manchester Metropolitan University, and serves as the Doctoral College Department Lead. He specializes in technical textiles, sustainable fashion, and medical textiles, with a focus on antimicrobial finishes, biopolymers, and functional apparel design. His research addresses sustainability challenges in the fashion industry, including eco-friendly denim processing, bark cloth applications, and smart textiles for health monitoring.

He holds a PhD in Medical Textiles (2005), MSc in Technical Textiles (2001), and B.Tech in Textile Technology (1999). Academic credentials include Chartered Fellow of the Textile Institute (2017) and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). He has led interdisciplinary projects funded by the Global Challenges Research Fund and collaborated with institutions like the Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai, and Istituto Marangoni, London.

His teaching spans undergraduate and postgraduate programs in sustainable product innovation and technical textiles. He has supervised five PhD and four Master’s students, currently guiding two PhD researchers. Key research interests include sustainable upcycling, CO2 laser denim patterning, and auxetic materials for sports protection.

Dr. Venkatraman has authored over 30 articles and book chapters, including works on encapsulation of organic compounds for biological textiles and smart biosensors. He serves on editorial boards, reviews for journals like Textile Research Journal, and delivers invited lectures globally, such as the 2023 TBIS conference on post-pandemic medical textiles.
