Pietro Biroli is an Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Bologna's Department of Economic Sciences. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Chicago and previously served as the UBS Foundation Assistant Professor at the University of Zurich. His affiliations include IZA, fRDB, HCEO, CHILD, CEPR, and the Jacobs Center for Productive Youth Development at UZH.
His research focuses on the origins and life-cycle evolution of health and human capital, with particular interests in health economics, applied econometrics, and social science genetics. He explores how genetics, family investments, and early childhood interventions influence health and economic inequality.
Key publications include studies on gene-environment interplay, maternal mental health in Pakistan, and the genetic architecture of non-cognitive skills. His work spans interdisciplinary projects like BHEPPE (Bologna Health Economics and Public Policy Evaluation) and ESSGN (European Social Science Genetics Network), funded by Horizon Europe and others. He collaborates on initiatives such as the Bachpan Cohort Study on maternal depression and child development.
Biroli's teaching and advising emphasize early childhood development and policy. His research has been featured in journals like the Review of Economic Studies, Nature Human Behavior, and PNAS.
