Pieter Annaert serves as Full Professor and Department Chair at KU Leuven's Department of Pharmaceutical and Pharmacological Sciences within the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. He leads the Subdivision Preclinical Pharmacokinetics and holds key leadership roles including Chair of the Department Council and membership in the Research Policy Council.
- PharmD and PhD credentials
- ORCID: 0000-0003-3525-7351
- Room 09.4066, ON2 Herestraat 49, Box 921, 3000 Leuven
His research centers on mechanistic pharmacokinetics with emphasis on physiology-based modeling (PBPK), hepatic drug disposition, and transporter-mediated drug interactions. Current projects include REPAIR-NEO (paracetamol repurposing for neonatal asphyxia), APPROVE (pediatric/orphan drug development), and ConcePTION (maternal medicine exposure during breastfeeding). His work bridges in vitro models with clinical translation, particularly in perinatal pharmacology and drug-induced cholestasis.
Analysis of recent publications (2023-2025) reveals strong focus on:
- Quantitative systems pharmacology for drug development
- Physiologically-based modeling of breast milk transfer
- Mechanistic studies of hepatic transporters in cholestasis
- Ontogeny of drug disposition pathways in neonates
- Time-dependent drug-drug interaction prediction
He actively contributes to major international consortia including ConcePTION (EU-funded) and IPREDICT, with research impacting regulatory science for vulnerable populations.
As an educator, he teaches Advanced Drug Development, Pharmacokinetics, and Drug Life Cycle courses while supervising PhD candidates like G.B. Abza. His leadership extends to the Biomedical Sciences Group Advisory Committee and Pharmaceutical Sciences Doctoral Committee.
