Philip Lewin is an Associate Professor and Associate Chair of the Sociology Department at Florida Atlantic University (FAU), and an Affiliate of FAU’s Center for Peace, Justice, and Human Rights. His office is located at CU 260 on the Boca Campus.
Professor Lewin's research focuses on cultural and political conflicts, community responses to economic and environmental injustice, social movements, and youth subcultures. His current work examines housing insecurity in South Florida, including an Emergency Housing Study and Policy Response Analysis for the City of Lake Worth Beach. Previously, he investigated the effects of energy market changes, mining pollution, population loss, government malfeasance, and opioid addiction in Central Appalachia, as well as youth subcultures such as punk and meme stock trading.
His scholarly output over the past decade demonstrates a trajectory from cultural studies of youth subcultures to applied research on housing and environmental justice. Early works centered on identity construction in punk subculture and micromobilization in Appalachia, while recent publications are policy-oriented reports addressing housing conditions and affordability in Lake Worth Beach, reflecting a shift toward actionable community solutions.
At FAU, Professor Lewin coordinates the Department’s Workshop on Sociological Research alongside Dr. Phillip Hough and previously served as the Department’s Director of Undergraduate Studies. No specific research grants or student advising details were provided in the source text.
